I believe the whole point of the rumors was to put Apple in a no-win situation. If the rumors are inaccurate, it will be made to look hopelessly outdated. To what end, you may ask? I think so that Samsung could say, "See, we had it first, and ours is better." If the iPhone 8 rumors prove to be correct, Apple will appear merely imitative. Maybe it's just me and I'm overly suspicious and cynical, but am I the only one connecting the dots here? All along, the iPhone 8 rumors, mainly out of Korea, have described the Galaxy S8. Of course, the S8 features wireless charging, also part of Kuo's prediction for the iPhone 8. The S8 has a metal frame and glass back, making it the glass sandwich that Ming-Chi Kuo has insisted would be the design approach of the iPhone 8. Those weren't the only features in common with the iPhone 8. Samsung on Wednesday confirmed a multitude of rumors by announcing its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8 -a device with an OLED "Infinity" display and no physical home button, much like Apple's rumored "iPhone 8." something many iPhone owners will struggle with for the next few months.Īctually, I doubt it, and the reaction in the Apple ( AAPL) fan media is fairly sanguine, except for noticing how much the S8 resembles the rumored features of the "iPhone 8." It seems to work very well, with the S8 going into desktop mode as soon as it's placed in the DeX docking cradle. DeX takes this capability and refines it by creating a PC-like desktop environment for the windowed apps to run in.

It's been clear that Google ( GOOG) has been positioning Android to have desktop capability, but so far, we haven't seen this exploited very much. Perhaps the most innovative feature of the S8 is Samsung DeX, which is Samsung's version of desktop capability for Android. Even though cellular carriers don't typically support such speeds, the modems essentially future-proof the phones for the next few years. It sounds as though Samsung is licensing the 835's X16 modem, or at least licensing substantial Qualcomm technology in order to achieve similar performance.

I've almost given up fighting the tech media preoccupation with the appearance of the smartphone screen, and the attribution of innovation based exclusively on appearance. Samsung was able to do away with most of the frame around its screen, and bend its edges so it appears to kind of float in your hand. What stands out most is how much Samsung has evolved phone design beyond Apple.
The WSJ's Geoffrey Fowler couldn't say enough about the screen: This makes the screen taller, and it occupies much more of the body of the phone, leaving thin bezel strips at the top and bottom. The screen features a new 18.5 x 9 aspect ratio with 2960 x 1440 pixels. Samsung has chosen to go exclusively with a curved screen similar to previous Galaxy Edge models. The Galaxy S8 will be the world's first smartphone with a processor fabricated on a 10 nm process.īut of course, media focus will be on the new AMOLED screen. Snags in ramping production on a new process node are not uncommon, and it appears that the company has overcome the problems. Not only is the event being held a month later than usual, but the phone won't be on store shelves until April 21. I can only assume that the rumors of production delays for Samsung's 10 nm process were at least partially true.
